I look at SMO and Viral marketing as an exercise in branding. It's like buying a super bowl commercial. The eye balls are there, but when people see the commercial, they are not in the buying mode. The business running the ad is just hoping that down the line when they are looking (searching) for a service / product to buy, and they come across your name, they will buy from you as you are the name they know.

So running an SMO campaign is fine, but you better make sure that your business is in a prime location (SERPS) when that user decides they need your products / service or you are just SOL.

Interesting article. Its like investing, day trading, were you can make a ton of money quickly, or lose it as fast, and there is long term bonds and mutual funds. I think the important part here is not to choose one or the other, but rather to be in the game on both fronts. Shoot for the digg's and stumbleupon's but also take care of your SEO.
