I loved your deconstruction of the name — hilarious and spot-on! Yes, it was our stealth-mode name, not the one we’d planned to launch a consumer produce under. We’re still in our beta test phase, so stay tuned. Our last company was also in the business of real-time information alerts, and we called it KnowNow :)

@rohit thanks for commenting. I'll refrain from reviewing KnowHow.com (especially for the cynical and Chinese markets) and instead note that if you change your name, you should try and buy that Angstro off the company before Marvel Comics creates a nuclear age SuperVillain named "Angstro". That would rock!

This is so very sad. It costs much much more to re-brand later, but most start-ups bootstrap and the name is unfortunately is either first on the chopping block or an after-thought.

Here's a company on techcrunch that did a re-do with one of mine ;) http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/04/22/the-importance-of-a-good-name-ditching-simulscribe-for-phonetag/

@Adam: thanks for sharing. People need to see more such stories... $30k for a great domain name like PhoneTag.com that immediately boosts the branding efforts of a growing business backed by nearly $6 million in funding... certainly looks like a bargain in hindsight. Sometimes I wonder why a brand will pay $250k and up for a logo designer with no guarantee of producing an accepted logo design, but balk at buying a domain name that gets to work immediately.

@jamesv: Thanks for stopping by and best of luck with me-trics.com. When you're ready to shop for a new domain name I'm happy to point you to the best resources I know. Too bad it always costs more tomorrow for domains you could have bought today.

@todd: thanks but as you can tell from the typos and the way I gave up re-fixing Wordpress's "fixing" of my paragraphs, I spent enough time on this one. I agree the rest of the list is at least as much fun. Heck, I bet we could go all night with the full 1,000.
